Note the perfectly smooth face. The myth behind
it is that when the first wave of Muslims came through, the
monks removed the mask which was made of gold and precious
jewels and hid it.
The big buddha is 175 feet tall and carved
from the face of the cliff. Most think that it was made in
the 3rd century AD but some have placed it as late as the
5th century.
